PET OF THE WEEK--JULY 14, 2008

SISSY

Oh man! I can’t believe I am pet of the week. My name is Sissy, I’m a baby yellow lab about five months old, that means I’m about twenty weeks old; way too young to be here at the sheriff’s department. All the dogs here are all grown up and some of them don’t seem very friendly. Sometimes I get scared when they all start barking, I never know why they start but it hurts my ears. They told me when I got here that I didn’t do anything wrong they just had to keep me from getting hit by a car and I would have to wait here until I got adopted, they also told me it wouldn’t take very long since I am young, cute, friendly, petite for a lab and very sweet. Hopefully someone will see me and just fall in love with me. Oh, and I’m more on the quiet side and not a wild and crazy pup like I’m sure some of my brothers are. If you would like to be my new best friend I would like to be your new best friend. Come visit me at the kennel, I’m the one sitting with my face pressed against my front kennel gate trying to get close to you, I don’t like being alone - kept away from what I love the most – people. If you need more information on me please call Pauline at 989-785-3463. Pauline asked me to tell you if you need help getting your dog fixed to give her a call, the Elk Country Animal Shelter can help you get this done.

smalllogoRaise the Woof Capital Fund Campaign

June marks Elk Country Animal Shelter's new era; the organization has purchased a 6000-square foot building in Atlanta on M-32 and Young’s Road, just west of the Montmorency County Sheriff's Department for the community's new shelter.  Despite initial plans to build, this opportunity was attractive and economical.   The building is twice the size Elk Country Animal Shelter would have constructed, and it can be remodeled to serve the community better, providing a "cat room" to observe cats at play, a get acquainted room for prospective adoptions, a grooming and receiving room to exam, vaccinate, bathe and groom shelter animals, a retail area to purchase shelter-related products, a humane education center and a spay and neuter clinic.  This shelter will make Montmorency County community an example for other areas and fulfill the group's mission to "be committed to providing a caring shelter and eventual placement of adoptable animals; be advocates for companion animals; provide education on the proper care of animals and promote understanding of the need to control the population of unwanted animals."
The spay and neuter clinic will serve the community, offering low cost spay and neuters for dogs and cats to people who can’t afford this procedure otherwise.  The equipment and clinic room will be outfitted through a $22,000 grant, recently awarded to the Elk Country Animal Shelter to partner our spay and neuter assistance grant.

We now have possession of the building with remodeling to begin almost immediately by Timm Construction from Alpena.  The grand opening will be announced in the near future.  As we promised the community and the animals that need us, dogs and cats that find themselves homeless through no fault of their own and come under our care will not spend another winter outside in Montmorency County. The Raise the Woof Capital Campaign continues as the organization remodels its new location.  If you have been waiting to donate, now is the time to please step up.  If you want to donate some time, the Elk Country Animal Shelter always welcomes your help. Bricks in three different sizes can be purchased as well as new engraved graintie memorial plaques, and there are plenty of naming opportunities remaining.  For more information on the Capital Campaign, contact Maggie at 786-5139 or Pauline at 785-3463.
